Context and Challenges

The Brussels Early Market is located at 22 Quai des Usines, 1000 Brussels, within the territory of the City of Brussels. It is the main wholesale platform for supplying the capital with fruits, vegetables, fresh produce, and other foodstuffs. The site is vast, covering 14 hectares of land, and includes:

  • 40,000 m2 of sales areas distributed across 5 covered halls
  • 8,000 m2 of logistics areas (storage and cold storage facilities)
  • 110 businesses (producers and wholesalers) located at the market

The site employs between 700 and 900 people and welcomes over 22,000 visitors per month.

As the current environmental permit was expiring, it was necessary to proceed with its renewal in order to maintain the operation of the classified installations and parking.

Objectives

Stratec prepared the application for the renewal of the Class 1A environmental permit.

The main installations on the site are:

  • parking
  • mechanical waste treatment facilities
  • the various storage areas (fruits and vegetables, hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste)
  • other Class 2 and 3 installations

Methodology

To compile the environmental permit application file, Stratec carried out the following steps:

  • Site visit to inventory the installations and verify operating conditions
  • Collection and analysis of information related to installations, consumption, waste, mobility, and parking
  • Preparation of technical documents: installation plans, parking plans, administrative appendices
  • Encoding and submission of the file via the Brussels Environment MyPermit tool
