Context and Objectives

In response to the rapid erosion of biodiversity due to human activities, Wallonia has developed the 360° Biodiversity Strategy project (SB360°). This project aims for preserved and restored biodiversity by 2050, with strategic directions set for 2030.

The plan is part of international and European commitments, notably the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the European Biodiversity Strategy. In accordance with Directive 2001/42/EC, the SB360° must be subject to an environmental impact report (EIR).

The impact report aims to identify potential positive and negative impacts, propose corrective actions, and clarify the plan’s objectives and implications for stakeholders and the public.

Method

The assessment is based on a comparison between the current state of the environment and the anticipated effects of the plan.

It follows three steps:

  • Analysis of the initial state,
  • Assessment of the project’s impacts and its alternatives,
  • Identification of vigilance points and monitoring measures.

Results

The study concludes numerous positive effects: improvement of biodiversity, health, water, soil, climate, and landscapes.

However, certain sectors (agriculture, forestry, tourism) could experience negative impacts, offset by opportunities for diversification and innovation.

Finally, the analysis recommends better quantifying the objectives and specifying their implementation.
