Route alignment study for the Namur–Gembloux–Louvain-la-Neuve cycle highway
This approximately 35 km corridor is the missing link in the cycle highway network in the Namur area and Walloon Brabant.
This project forms part of the FAST 2030 vision, which aims to increase the bicycle modal share fivefold by strengthening the cycling infrastructure available in Wallonia.
The Walloon Region, having secured pre-financing for this project, entrusted Stratec with the assignment to study the preferred alignment for this future cycle highway.
Location: Wallonia
Client: SOFICO, SPW
Date: 2022-2023
Questions raised
- What is the best possible route for this cycling corridor?
- What is its technical feasibility?
- Which junctions and sections need to be developed to ensure user safety?
Ambitions
- High level of service for everyday cyclists (feeder corridor or ring route around urban centres)
- Encourage new people to cycle: enhanced safety, comfort and efficiency
Tools used
- Observations and field surveys
- Multi-thematic spatial diagnosis
- Directional and automatic traffic counts, analysis of FCD data
- Multi-criteria analysis of alignment variants, supported by a traffic micro-simulation model (VISSIM) on the N4
- Interviews
Results
A roadmap for the preferred alignment, including a proposed phasing of the works, identification of constraints (requiring further studies/consultation) and design principles illustrated by typical cross-sections.
