Feasibility study for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations

SOFICO (Société de financement complémentaire des infrastructures), a public company mandated by the Walloon Region, manages the structural road network. Initially, it entrusted Stratec with the task of identifying and mapping relevant locations for the installation of fast electric charging stations. In collaboration with territorial development agencies, a list of priority sites was then defined. Subsequently, SOFICO renewed its trust in Stratec to analyze the concrete feasibility of implementing these charging stations on the selected sites.

Context and Objectives

The objective was to verify the technical, financial, and land feasibility of each identified location for charging stations, taking into account accessibility, connection, security, and space availability.

The mission, conducted in three phases, first involved a cartographic and theoretical analysis to validate the relevance of the sites. It continued with consultation with the seven Territorial Directorates to refine the selection, followed by a technical and financial feasibility study in collaboration with network managers (GRD).

Results

Two charging capacities were examined: 70 kVA for long-term parking and 900 kVA for ultra-fast charging.

Each site selected after the analysis was subject to a project sheet detailing the evaluation criteria.

The study resulted in several recommendations: integrate a multi-criteria analysis to prioritize sites, supplement this analysis with field visits, take into account European AFIR regulations, and organize a new exchange with certain Territorial Directorates to refine the responses.
